This specimen was lot 4709 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $141. The catalog description [2] noted, "France. ¼ Franc, 1840-B. Louis Philippe I. Brilliant mint luster. NGC graded MS-64." This tiny coin was struck at Rouen under the régime of king Louis Philippe (1830-48). It is a scarcer date of a type struck 1831-45. All quarter francs of this reign are of this type, which is common. It was replaced in 1845 by a twenty-five centimes piece (F.167) and demonetized in 1852. The catalog[1] notes 108 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is priced about double the commonest date (1840A). An 1840/30 overdate is noted.
Recorded mintage: 53,333[1].
Specification: 1.25 g, .900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: F.166/84, KM-740.2; Gad-355.
