This specimen was lot 23414 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. West Friesland. 3 Gulden, 1786. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details. A sharply struck, gray toned, and fully detailed coin with light hairlines but without any major distracting marks. From the BKingdom Collection." This specimen is from a type struck in Westfriesland throughout the eighteenth century until 1794, when the United Provinces were invaded and occupied by the French. This subtype (KM 141.2) is known for 1714, 1763-67, 1776, 1781, 1785-86, 1791-94. Its face value was 60 stuivers. The Low Countries did not regain their independence until 1815, with the formation of the kingdom of the Netherlands. The design features the Netherlands virgin with hat of freedom, with spear, leaning on altar with bible. The obverse legend hanc tuemur hac nitimur means, "on her we lean, it is she whom we protect."
Recorded mintage: unknown but four times the price of a three gulden from Utrecht.
