This specimen was lot 4029 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. 2 Centesimi, 1896-R. PCGS MS-65 BN Secure Holder. Key date. Sharply struck. Attractive hints of mint red amongst the devices." Between 1861 and 1867, the government struck 153 million two centesimi pieces. It was not until 1895 that more were needed and this type was struck 1895-1900. This is a scarce date. King Umberto was assassinated by an anarchist in 1900.
