This specimen was lot 21574 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $7,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Geneva. Ecu-Pistolet, 1563-P. NGC AU-58. Crowned Imperial eagle with Geneva Shield, "GENEVA CIVITAS"; Reverse: Stylized multi-ray sun with "IHS" at center, legend: 'POST TENEBRAS LVX'. This appealing dated 16th-century gold coin shows a meticulous strike on a nearly round planchet and boasts a wealth of sparkling luster due to significant texture in the fields. A RARELY matched example in terms of overall quality." Friedberg lists this obscure type for 1562-86 and notes that the last écu pistolet was struck in 1642.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: .917 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-249; HMZ-279.
