SA39-2425r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2425 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Abdul Mejid, 1839-1861, AE para, Kostantiniye, AH1255 year 8, PCGS graded MS63 BN." This is from the first year of milled coinage and in which the para was converted from a billon to a pure copper coin. This type was struck years 8-16, then its weight was reduced to 0.8-0.9 g (KM 665.2) and later to 0.5-0.6 g (KM 665.3, starting year 18). For the first time, we have mintages reported.

Recorded Mintage: 1,000,000.

Specification: copper, 1.0-1.1 g.

Catalog reference: KM-665.1.
