France 1726C ecu rev DSLR.jpg

This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Caen mint. Most Caen mint issues are rare but this one is fairly common. The SCWC reports 1726-28, 1738 and 1740 from this mint; Droulers adds 1729 and 1739. The mint closed in 1771 along with Bourges ("Y"), Grenoble ("Z"), Tours ("E") and Poitiers ("G"). The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV of France. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Recorded mintage: 1,277,071[2].

Specification: 29.49 g, .917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered, DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM.

Catalog reference: Gad-321; KM 486.5, Dav-1330, Dr/4 no. 819, Dr/2 no. 579.
