This specimen was lot 2389 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1649-T. Nantes Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). PCGS AU-53 Secure Holder. A RARE date and mint combination. Long truncation. A nice example with light wear consistent with grade and no overt bag marks. Pleasant appearance with golden yellow throughout most of the surfaces with some hints of orange creeping around some devices. Ex: Coin Galleries Sale April 10, 1985, Lot #485." This louis d'or à la mèche longue, struck at the Paris mint 1646-59, is among the more available louis of Louis XIV of France. It is still an expensive coin.
Recorded mintage: 1,372[1], a rare date.
Specification: 6.75 g, .917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.
