Sincona sale 35, lot 5626

This specimen was lot 5626 in Sincona sale 35 (Zurich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Confederation, 1/2 Franken 1908. Bern. Vorzüglich. (Swiss confederation, half franc of 1908, Bern mint. Extremely fine.)"

This type was struck at the Bern mint 1874-1967. The design is still in use today tho the coin is now copper-nickel. This specimen is struck to the standard of the French half franc of 1866-1920. This date is fairly common in circulated condition. Prior to confederation in 1850, each Swiss canton issued its own coins.

Recorded mintage: 800,000 plus a few specimens.

Specification: 2.5 g, .835 fine silver, .067 troy oz ASW, 18.1 mm diameter, reeded edge; this specimen 2.53 g.

Catalog reference: Divo 249, HMZ 2-1206r, KM 23.
