Schulman sale 347, lot 642

This specimen was lot 642 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$3,861 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted, "Grote oude gouden rijder. 1620. over 1600. type I op groot plaatje. Ruiter naar rechts boven provinciewapentje MO• AVR• PRO• CON – FOE• BELG• FRIS• leeuwtje. Kz. generaliteitswapen zonder waardeaanduiding, jaartal boven de kroon. gladde rand. RRRR. Velden gebruneerd. Zeer fraai." The catalog calls this coin a "gold rider," a term American numismatists reserve for the similar coin of the eighteenth century valued at fourteen gulden. Of course, cavalier d'or, a French term, means the same thing. This rare type is listed for Friesland for 1607-28.
