This bronze five mils was accompanied by three, twenty-five, fifty and one hundred mils coins. Cyprus, off the coast of Turkey, fell to the British in 1878 and was made a crown colony in 1925. It became a republic in 1960 and has been de facto partitioned between the Turkish north and the Greek center and south since the early 1970's. The second specimen was lot 56069 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "CYPRUS. 5 Mils, 1955. London Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC MS-66 Red Brown."
