(Litzmannstadt ghetto, ten pfennig of 1942. Very rare, Good very fine)." The Nazis renamed Lodz to Litzmannstadt after Karl Litzmann (1850-1936), WW I general and Nazi party member. Five, ten and twenty mark tokens also exist and are scarce. The ghetto was liquidated in 1944 and all its inhabitants sent to the death camps. | |

The first specimen was lot 36082 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Litzmannstadt magnesium 10 Pfennig Token 1942 AU. Issued for the Concentration Camp in Lodz, to replace the paper chits." The second specimen was lot 2698 in Sincona sale 83 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$870 including buyer's fees).
