Sincona sale 69, lot 252

This specimen was lot 252 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,195 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, ab 1806 Königreich | Albertiner. August, 1553-1586. Taler 1557, Annaberg. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, August I, 1553-86, thaler of 1557, Annaberg mint. Good very fine.)"

Davenport cites this type for 1554-58. The SCWC divides this type into KM MB158, struck 1554-56, and KM MB157, struck 1554-58. Other thalers, including Dav-9793 (struck 1553-71), Dav-9794 (struck 1556-59) and Dav-9796 (struck 1557 only), were struck during this part of the elector's reign.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.85 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB157, Keilitz/Kahnt 48, Dav-9791.
