This specimen was lot 1984 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €15,000 (about US$20,876 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MÜNSTER, BISTUM, Ferdinand von Bayern, 1612-1650. Goldgulden 1636, Münster. FERDI [E]LECT · COL · EPS · MONASTERI · BAV · DVX Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild//S_PAVLVS : APOST - PATRON : MONA - ST St. Paulus steht v. v. mit Schwert und Buch zwischen der geteilten Jahreszahl 16 - 36. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Kl. Kratzer im Feld der Rückseite, kl. Stempelfehler, sehr schön. Erworben 1951 bei der Firma Julius Jenke, München. (Germany, bishopric of Munster, Ferdinand of Bavarai, 1612-50, goldgulden of 1636, Munster mint. Obverse: crowned, quartered arms with escutcheon; reverse: St. Paul stands with sword and book, dividing the date. Extremely rare, obverse die fault, scratches on reverse, very fine. Purchased from Julius Jenke in 1951.)"
Altho this type of 1633-37 is listed as a ducat in many references, the weight noted below causes us to side with the auctioneers in calling this a goldgulden. The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. The bishop succeeded in establishing the Counter-Reformation there and holding the region for the Catholic Church. Ferdinand was also bishop of Hildesheim, Liege and Paderborn and archbishop of Cologne.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.25 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3,19 g.
