Künker sale 293, lot 15
Münster in 1547

This specimen was lot 15 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €480 (about US$647 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MÜNSTER, BISTUM, Ferdinand von Bayern, 1612-1650. Reichstaler 1634, Münster. Kl. Randfehler, sehr schön. (bishopric of Münster, Ferdinand of Bavaria, 1612-50, thaler of 1634, Munster mint. Edge defects, very fine.)"

All the thalers of Münster are scarce. The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. The bishop succeeded in establishing the Counter-Reformation there and holding the region for the Catholic Church. This type of 1633-46 is among the more available for this locale. Ferdinand was also bishop of Hildesheim, Liege and Paderborn and archbishop of Cologne.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 8, Schulze 8 c, Dav-5591.
