This specimen was lot 23644 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI Shilling 1940, MS65 NGC, fully lustrous with just a few tiny surface marks, very scarce date in this certified grade." This type is listed for 1938-44, after which the fineness was lowered to .500. This product of the Melbourne mint is the key date. Some of the World War Two issues were struck at the San Francisco mint. Australia converted to the dollar in 1966.
