Goldberg Sale 146, lot 1523

This specimen was lot 1523 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $180. The catalog description^[1] noted, "German States: Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Double Groschen, 1717-IT. Frederick II. 1693-1732. On the Reformation anniversary. Draped bust right. Reverse: 9 lines of legend. Pop 1; 1 in 63; This coin shown in the PCGS Pop Report. A hint of light tone. PCGS graded AU-53. The Augustana Collection." On the occasion of the bicentennial of the Reformation, the duke also issued a 1/24 thaler (KM 191), quarter thaler (KM 194), half thaler (KM 196), several thalers (KM 197, 198, 199) and 1½ thaler (KM 201) and ducat (KM 203) and double ducat (KM 205) and 17 ducat (KM 207). For some reason, this coin no longer appears in the SCWC altho it appeared in prior editions. Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was not the only state to mark the event; see this thaler from Stolberg. This example, catalogued as a twelfth thaler, is the plate coin in Numista.
