Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1400
JE160-1400r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1400 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €180 (about US$228 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel II (1665-1700), AR patagon, 1677, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond stokkenkruis met een vuurijzer tussen het jaartal en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Gereinigd. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver patagon of 1677, Bruges mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Cleaned, very fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Bruges mint 1666-80, 1683-92 and many dates are listed quite inexpensively. Patagons were also struck in Brabant. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen is 27,89 g.

Catalog reference: KM 63, Dav-4494, G.H. 350-4a; Delm-344; VH 698.
