Zurich 1673 1/2 thaler

Sincona sale 98, lot 4637

This specimen was lot 4637 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$290 including buyers' fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich, Stadt und Kanton, Halbtaler 1673, Zürich. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. Rv. Interessante Punkte über I von DOMINE, I von IN und der 1 von 1673. Sie kommen auf verschiedenen grösseren Nominalen bis 1677, teilweise auch auf Vorderseitenumschriften, vor. (Switzerland, city and canton of Zürich, half thaler of 1673, Zürich mint. Rare, Very Fine-Extremely Fine, Attractively toned.)"

This type was struck 1673 and 1690. Numista mentions a 1674 half thaler, which we have not seen. The canton struck quarter thalers (KM 101) and half thalers only sporadically.
