This specimen was lot 2011 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$7,236 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, FERRARA, Ercole II. d'Este, 1534-1559. 1/2 Scudo 1546. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Tönung, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Leu 68, Zürich 1996, Nr. 199. (duchy of Ferrara, Hercules II of Este, 1534-59, half scudo of 1546. Very rare, fine toning, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The duchy of Ferrara preserved a precarious independence during the Middle Ages but was gradually reincorporated into the Papal States in the seventeenth century.
