This specimen was lot 70525 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. 20 Pfennig, 1874-H. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. KM-5. Sharply struck with attractive subtle toning." This coin is an silver twenty pfennig from a type issued 1873-77 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G"), Darmstadt (mintmark "H", shown here) and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. This date is moderately common. When the twenty pfennig was revived in 1887, it was in copper-nickel (KM 9.1).
Recorded mintage: 1,842,000.
Specification: 1.11 g, 0.900 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM 5.
