This specimen was lot 3178 in Goldberg sale 85 (Los Angeles, June 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Austria. Ducat, 1514. Maximilian I, 1493-1519. St. Leopold standing. Reverse: Quarter[ed] arms. Boldly struck. Very Rare. Extremely Fine. Maximilian I (1459-1519), was the son of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor. During the last decade of Frederick's reign, Maximilian played an important role in the court and therefore learnt to be an emperor. After his marriage with Mary of Burgundy (see the previous lot), his political importance was secured by the her wealth, and later in the Italian wars, he played an important role opposing King Louis XII of France from marching to southern Italy. During his reign, the influence of the House of Habsburg was expanded.
A great piece that may form an excellent collection of the Italian Renaissance Wars together with other early gold pieces of Italy and France that we're offering in this auction."
