Sincona sale 18, lot 2242

This specimen was lot 2242 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 1,500 (about US$1,976 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"40 Francs 1808. Toulouse Selten. Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön. (empire of France, Napoleon I, forty francs of 1808, Toulouse mint, rare, very fine.)"

While the 1808-A and 1808-H are fairly common, the 1808-M, 1808-U and 1808-W are all rare. The type was struck 1807-08 only.

Recorded mintage: 4,196.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz, this specimen 12.88 g.
