Sincona sale 39, lot 4230

This specimen was lot 4230 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 100 CHF (about US$120 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"AUSTRIA, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 Vereinstaler 1865 E. Karlsburg. Sehr schön. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, union thaler of 1865, Karlsburg mint. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1857-65 at Vienna ("A"), Kremnitz ("B"), Karlsburg ("E"), Milan ("M") and Venice ("V"). This date is common. The convention thaler was 28.06 g, 0.833 fine until 1851, then 25.99 g, 0.900 fine until 1856, then reduced to this size. The last thaler was struck in 1868.

Recorded mintage: 483,944.

Specification: 18.51 g, 0.900 fine silver, .535 troy oz ASW, 33 mm diameter, this specimen 18.45 g.
