This specimen was lot 2791 in Sincona sale 80 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 9,500 CHF (about US$11,386 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALY | Siena, Repubblica, 1404-1555. Grosso della lupa da 7 soldi o. J. (1510). .SENA.VETVS.CIVITAS.VIRGINIS Wölfin steht nach links, den Kopf nach hinten geneigt, während sie einen der Zwillinge säugt, der seine Hand ausstreckt, um ihre Schnauze zu streicheln; der andere Zwilling sitzt auf dem Rücken der Wölfin. Rv. ALPHA.ET.w.PRINCIPIV.ET.FINS Kreuz im Neunpass. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Italy, republic of Siena, 1404-1555, grosso of the wolf of seven soldi, circa 1510. Obverse: the Roman she-wolf stands left, with Romulus on her back and Remus on the ground reaching out to her; reverse: cross in polylobe. Of the highest rarity, Very fine-extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"
The Republic of Siena, in Tuscany south of the better known city of Florence, survived as an independent city state until her conquest by the grand duke of Tuscany in the mid-1500's, at which time the coinage ended.
