Sincona sale 97, lot 1700
the Republic of Florence in 1494, on the eve of the French invasion

This specimen was lot 1700 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$326 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Siena, Repubblica, 1404-1555. Grosso da 7 soldi o. J., Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Italy, republic of Siena, 1404-1555, undated grosso of seven soldi. Very Fine-Extremely Fine.)"

The Sienese invited Gian Galeazzo Visconti of Milan as their lord to help resist Florentine aggression but he was thrown out in 1404. This coin was struck after that event but before the final collapse in 1555. The grosso replaced the dinero in Italian coinage in the late Middle Ages after rulers had debased the dinero into uselessness. It was copied in France (gros tournois), England (groat) and Germany (groschen).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver or billon, this specimen 1.69 g.

Catalog reference: MIR 536/3.
