This specimen was lot 616 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $211.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "France (Poitiers mint), ecu, Louis XV, 1726-G. Nicely toned VF with very light surface corrosion. With original (generic) certificate from the salvagers. Recovered from: Auguste, sunk in 1761 off Nova Scotia, Canada." This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Poitiers mint, which struck this type 1726-29, 1735-40. This is the only common date from this mint. The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV of France. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Specification: 29.49 g, .917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered, DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen is 27.48 grams.
