This coin, called a denier au buste pompard, was an attempt by the French ancien régime to circulate a coin half the value of the double tournois minted by the millions during the reign of Louis XIII (d.1643). It flopped and no more were struck. Its face value was 1/720 of a silver écu à la mèche longue. This specimen was lot 1476 in CGB sale 46 (Paris, December 2010).
Recorded mintage: 4,904,636 at Paris for 1648-49.
Specification: 1.6 g, copper, 15 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by J. Warin.
