Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 1025

This specimen was lot 1025 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €90 (about US$125 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIII (1610-1643), AR quart d'écu, 1628L, Bayonne. D/ Croix fleurdelisée. R/ Ecu de France couronné, entre II-II. Belle patine. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIII, 1610-43, silver quarter écu of 1628, Bayonne mint. Obverse: floriate cross; reverse: crowned arms of France dividing value. Nice toning, very fine.)"

This type was struck for the entire length of Louis XIII's reign from two dozen mints and is common in circulated condition.

Recorded mintage: 119,725 (including some 1/8 écus)[2], a common date.

Specification: 9.71 g, .917 fine silver, 26-31 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 9,41 g.
