Stack's Bowers May 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 32633
SB524-32633r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32633 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. Trojak (3 Groschen), 1623. Krakow Mint. Sigismund III Vasa. PCGS MS-62. Quite pleasingly struck and nearly-Choice, this example offers a subtle and enchanting tone." The kingdom of Poland came under the rule of the king of Sweden, Sigismund III, in 1587. He converted to Roman Catholicism to accept the Polish crown, which caused the Swedish diet to depose him. He invaded Sweden in an attempt to reclaim his throne but was unsuccessful. The expenses of the war damaged and weakened the Polish monarchy, but the main source of Polish weakness was the greed and selfishness of the Polish nobility. This type is listed for 1618-24 and undated.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-31; Kop-1228.
