Künker sale 406, lot 4448

This specimen was lot 4448 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,149 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand I. 1522-1558-1564. Taler 1556, Joachimstal. Münzmeister Rupprecht Puellacher. Sehr schön. (Austria, Ferdinand I, 1558-64, thaler of 1556, Joachimsthal mint. Very fine.)"

This particular type is a very early thaler; the joachimsthaler is the ancestor of our dollar. Davenport lists this type for 1548-59. Other Bohemian thalers for 1556 include Dav-8048 and Dav-A8050.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.81 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB105, Dav-8046; Dietiker 148; Halacka 114; Voglh. 49 VII.
