Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75419

This specimen was lot 75419 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NORWAY. 5 Ore, 1918. Haakon VII. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. Lightly corroded throughout, as typical for this delicate iron issue, but bearing little in the way of surface wear." Material shortages during World War One caused the administration to convert this denomination to iron for 1917-20. Unprotected iron makes a poor coinage alloy and this type is rare in collectible, uncorroded condition. This is the scarcest date of the four years struck.

Recorded mintage: 432,000 including a 1918/7 overdate.
