This specimen was lot 1146 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it sold for 90 euro (about US$138 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE ROYALE, Henri IV (1589-1610), AR huitième d'écu, 1610 L, Bayonne. Droit: Croix feuillue. Revers: Ecu de France couronné, entre V-III. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Henry IV (1589-1610), silver eighth écu of 1610, Bayonne mint. Obverse: flowered cross; reverse: crowned arms of France divide "V-III". Very fine.)"

This eighth écu was struck by the hammer at at least a dozen mints starting in the time of Henry III (1580) and continuing into the reign of Louis XIV (1651).

Recorded mintage: 241,391 (mostly quarter écus), a rare date as most are.

Specification: 4.85 g, 0.833 fine silver, 24-26 mm diameter.
