Revision as of 10:01, 11 February 2025
This specimen was lot 5121 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 2100 CHF (about US$2,656 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEDEN Karl XII. 1697-1718. 8 Mark 1699. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. (Sweden, Charles XII, 1697-1718, eight mark of 1699, very rare, good very fine.)"
The catalogs note that the minting of riksdalers dwindled in the 1650's and ceased in the 1670's in favor of the eight mark but does not note why. The striking of riksdalers resumed in the eighteenth century after the Great Northern War (1700-21).
Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
Specification: 31.34 g, .922 fine silver, this specimen 31,43 g.
Catalog reference: SM 33, Dav-4540A, KM 319.
