Eliasberg lot 3104

The 1741MoF eight escudos was one of a series struck 1732-47 during the reign of Philip V (1700-1746). It superseded the gold cobs previously minted. This specimen was lot 3104 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $9,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "1741 MF 8 escudos. Mexico City mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Bright yellow gold with some peripheral toning on reverse, good lustre, some scattered hairlines, abrasion on A of HISPAN. A sharp and handsome example of the type. This was the date chosen to represent the type in the Karon collection. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 27.01 grams, 35.90 mm diameter.
