This specimen was lot 3847 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[2] noted, "Russia. 5 Roubles, 1843-СПБ АЧ. Nicholas I. Eagle. Reverse: Value and date. NGC graded MS-61." This type was struck at the St. Petersburg mint 1832-46. Large numbers were made but few survive. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to .186 troy oz.
Recorded mintage: 1,852,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 6.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, .193 troy oz AGW.
