from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 20411
France SB818-20411r.jpg

This is an écu de France-Navarre of the Aix mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. This specimen was lot 20411 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1719-9. Rennes Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC MS-63. An écu de France-Navarre struck at the Rennes mint in Brittany. A better date of a SCARCE type, intricately detailed throughout the design and attractively toned with soft gray color in the centers and fiery-gold and electric-blue flares among the peripheries. Several instances of minor adjustment marks appear at the edges, but they do little to diminish the eye appeal of this wonderful survivor." Droulers[2] notes the 1719-9 as fairly scarce. The specimen shown is struck on a "flan neuf." The type was struck 1718-20 in substantial numbers but is not so common as the preceding écu vertugadin.

Recorded mintage: 1,794,131[2].

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Gad-318, Dr/5 no. 743, Dr/4 № 816, Dr/2 № 558, Dav-1327, KM 435.26.
