Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1726

This specimen was lot 1726 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €420 (about US$599 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LUXEMBOURG, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR escalin, 1641, Luxembourg. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et un écu d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Rare. Beau à Très Beau. (duchy of Luxembourg, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver escalin of 1641, Luxemburg mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, bearing a sword and the arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"

This escalin or schelling is listed in the SCWC for 1637 only. Similar (and more common) escalins were made at made at Brussels, Tournai, Antwerp, s'Hertogenbosch and Maastricht.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.26 g, 0.582 fine silver, this specimen 4,97 g.
