This specimen was lot 72150 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1856-LM MB. Lima Mint. PCGS MS-62. A striking piece with sharp details, especially on the figure of Liberty and the reverse coat of arms. The coin's fine features are enhanced by attractive deep toning with hints of color on the peripheries. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck 1842-51 and 1854-56. Most of the dates and overdates are common but the 1856 is scarce. In 1858, Peru converted to decimal coinage and closed the branch mints.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce date.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver.
