Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71294
SB1021-71294r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71294 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Scudo, 1837-R Year VII. Rome Mint. Gregory XVI. NGC MS-62. Immensely dazzling and captivating, this nearly-choice crown presents an attractive deeper tone along with exceptionally sharp strike, all while a radiant luster emanates from beneath." This type was struck 1835-46 at Rome and Bologna and this is a common date despite the paltry mintage.

Recorded mintage: 11,000.

Specification: 26.89 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-192, KM-1324; Berman-3285, Mont-78.
