This specimen was part of lot 22739 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), which sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Set (4 Pieces), 1671. Charles II. All PCGS Gold Shield Certified. A nicely matched Maundy set graded by PCGS. Very high quality for such an early set. The 4 Pence is graded AU-58, the 3 Pence is graded AU-58, the 2 Pence is graded MS-62 and the Penny is graded AU-55. All with nice original toning. From Jeff Zarit, 2011, at $850, the Q. David Bowers Collection." All the dated silver tuppence of Charles II are of this type, which is common. The silver tuppence was struck thru the eighteenth century but became less and less useful until finally superseded by Boulton and Watt's copper "cartwheel" tuppence of the 1790's. Silver tuppence are still struck for the Maundy sets.
