Heritage sale 3030, lot 23317

This specimen was lot 23317 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Proof 10000 Francs (1970) NI, PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC, mirror surfaces with faint handling in the fields, obverse with the bust of General de Gaulle. Struck to mark the 10th year of independence (1960)." Chad, independent since 1960, finds herself stretched across the Sahara and Sahel of Africa. Recurrent droughts stoke ethnic conflicts which periodically erupt into civil war. Recent discoveries of oil enable the ruling elite to retain its hold on power.

Recorded mintage: 4,000.

Specification: 36 g, 0.900 fine gold, 1.041 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 11.
