This ducat was lot 4402 in Goldberg sale 41 (Beverly Hills, May 2007), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Bavaria. Ducat, 1848. Ludwig I, 1825-1848. Head right. Reverse: Arms supported by lions. Brilliant lustrous surfaces. NGC graded MS-62 Prooflike." Two types of ducat were issued in the 1840's; this type, with a conventional coat of arms on the reverse, and KM 433, with a city view and the legend "EX AURO RHENI" (from Rhenish gold). Both are scarce. One of the results of unification was the termination of separate coinages for each of the independent states, including Bavaria. No ducats were struck after 1863. Bavaria issued coins using the united empire standard in the denominations of 2, 5, 10 and 20 mark during 1871-1918 when the empire collapsed at the end of World War One. King Maximilian II ruled 1848-64.
