Künker sale 293, lot 33

This specimen was lot 33 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,483 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MÜNSTER, BISTUM, Franz Arnold von Wolff-Metternich, 1707-1718. Reichstaler 1711, Münster. Schöne Patina, attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. (bishopric of Munster, Francis Arnold of Wolff-Metternich, 1707-18, thaler of 1711, Munster mint. handsome patina, attractive very fine example.)"

The bishops of Munster issued thalers on occasion during the early eighteenth century but a "sede vacante" issue of 1761 (Dav-2470) is the last. All of the ecclesiastical states were mediatized by Napoleon and handed over to his allies in 1800-06. This type was issued 1709-11 and is rather expensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2466; Schulze 177, KM-139.
