Sincona sale 89, lot 612

This specimen was lot 612 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,189 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich, Jean II. le Bon, 1350-1364. Gros à la couronne o. J. (1. Emission, 22.8.1358), Gutes sehr schön. Etwas korrodiert und kleine Kratzer. Exemplar der Auktion Auctiones AG 26, Basel, September 1996, Los 2050. (kingdom of France, John II the Good, 1350-64, undated groat of the crown, first emission, August 1358. Good very fine, Some corrosion and scratches.)"

This coin superseded the gros à la fleur de lis (Dupl-304) but itself under went several emissions, as follows:

  • Dupl-305 (first emission, shown here): 4.589 g, 0.319 fine silver;
  • Dupl-305A (second emission, October 1358): 3.263 g, 0.319 fine silver;
  • Dupl-305B (third emission, November 1358): 3.263 g, 0.239 fine silver;
  • Dupl-305C (fourth emission, January 1359): 2.719 g, 0.239 fine silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.589 g, 0.319 fine silver, this specimen 4.04 g.
