Sincona sale 89, lot 613

This specimen was lot 613 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,255 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich, Jean II. le Bon, 1350-1364. Gros aux trois lis o. J. (2. Emission, 7.6.1359). Fast vorzüglich. Etwas korrodiert, sonst aussergewöhnlich gut ausgeprägt. Exemplar der Auktion Auctiones AG 26, Basel, September 1996, Los 2052. (kingdom of France, John II the Good, 1350-64, undated groat of the three lilies, second emission, June 1359. About extremely fine, Some minor corrosion, otherwise extraordinary well struck.)"

This coin superseded the blanc à la couronne (Dupl-306) but itself under went several emissions, as follows:

  • Dupl-307 (first emission, June 3, 1359): 3.496 g, 0.279 fine silver;
  • Dupl-307A (second emission, shown here): 3.496 g, 0.239 fine silver;
  • Dupl-307B (third emission, July 8, 1358): 3.496 g, 0.209 fine silver;
  • Dupl-307C (fourth emission, July 27, 1359): 3.059 g, 0.199 fine silver.
  • Dupl-307D (fifth emission, September 1358): 2.719 g, 0.179 fine silver;
  • Dupl-307E (sixth emission, October 2, 1359): 2.175 g, 0.179 fine silver;
  • Dupl-307F (seventh emission, October 18, 1359): 2.039 g, 0.159 fine silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.589 g, 0.319 fine silver, this specimen 3.53 g.
