Sincona sale 18, lot 1629
Oels in Silesia in 1648

This specimen was lot 1629 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 6,000 (about US$7,906 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Taler 1674. Öls. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Württemberg-Oels, thaler of 1674, choice extremely fine.)"

Silesia is considered a German State even tho the province was then under Austrian rule and is now in Poland. This type, listed for 1674 only along with a double thaler, is rare like all the thalers of this locality. A junior branch of the duke of Württemberg resumed coinage of Munsterberg-Oels in 1674.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.30 g.

Catalog reference: Friedensburg/Seger 2293. Ebner 6, Dav-7887; KM-11.
