This specimen is one of a type struck at Popayán 1772-89. The Colombian mints (Popayán and Nuevo Reino) concentrated on minting gold, to the near exclusion of silver which predominated at the other colonial mints. While this makes Colombian colonial silver coins expensive, Colombian colonial gold is (comparatively) reasonable and this type is fairly common. The second specimen was lot 1732 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA: Carlos III, 1759-1788, AV escudo, 1772-P. Assayer JS, finest graded by PCGS, PCGS graded MS64, R. Interestingly, beginning in 1772, Charles III put into place a secret program to devaluate the coinage, lowering the gold fineness from 0.917 to 0.875, and lowering the silver fineness from 0.931 to 0.895."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.901 fine gold, .098 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Cayón-12253, KM-48.2. Fr-42. Restrepo-54.2. Note: KM 48.2 applies to the issues of 1772-84, which are 0.901 fine, while KM 48.2a, issued 1785-89, is only 0.875 fine. They are identical to the naked eye.
