This specimen was lot 71505 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Rupee, AH 1027 Year 13 (1618). Qandahar Mint. Muhammad Jahangir. NGC MS-62. This beautiful example displays strong strike and some attractive luster." The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This type was struck years 11-17. It is priced slightly higher than the most common mint, Tatta. Qandahar is now in Afghanistan.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 11.44 g, silver.
Catalog reference: KM 142.2.
