Steve Album sale 51, lot 2541

The first specimen was lot 71504 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Rupee, AH 1025 Year 11 (1616). Patna Mint. Muhammad Jahangir. NGC AU-53. Incredibly attractive, this Mughal piece displays robust strike quality and good luster, despite a limited amount of time spent in commerce." The second specimen was lot 2541 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $84. The catalog description[2] noted, "MUGHAL: Jahangir, 1605-1628, AR rupee, Patna, AH1025 year 11, month of Azar, without any testmarks, VF-XF." The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This type was struck years 6-26 from twenty mints. It is priced slightly higher than the most common mint, Tatta.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.44 g, silver, the second specimen 11.43 g.

Catalog reference: KM 145.12.
