from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72323
Denmark SB620-72323r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72323 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Speciedaler, 1776-CHL. Altona Mint. Christian VII. NGC VF-35. A seldom seen type, especially this wholesome, the present example offers deep cabinet toning and only light wear on the high points." Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. Until 1813, one ducat = 2 speciedaler = 12 mark = 192 skilling Danske. This type was struck 1776 only and is scarce. Another speciedaler for 1776 (KM 632.1) was also struck at Copenhagen in 1780 but both dates are rare. The Kongsberg issues are filed under Norway.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.89 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-1308; KM 632.2.
